The History of Blackjack
People who usually play casino games all know about the game blackjack or twenty one as it is sometimes called. It is one of the most popular games in the world of casino. Aside from it being exciting, it also has a house edge of less than one percent with basic strategy which makes it the lowest advantage a house can have in any table game.
Blackjack had been around for a few centuries though its history is quite blurry. Although historians never found where it originally came from, many believe that it originated from the French game Vingt-et-Un, meaning twenty one, though this is not believed to be the first game to ever have rules like that of today's blackjack.
The game was called '21' when it was brought to America in the early 19th century but this did not become eventually popular among the people. Because of this, gambling houses had to attract customers by offering bonus payouts. One example is that if the player holds an ace of spades and a black jack (either jack of spades or clubs), it would lead to a ten to one payout. This hand is called blackjack which is now the name of that game. The ten to one payout however never reached the present.
There are other games which are believed to be part of the development of blackjack. For example, the bust system was believed to come from the Italian game Sette e Mezzo or Seven and a half which targets 7 ½ with the eights, nines, and tens taken out of the deck. The face cards have a value of ½, ace with a value of one, and number cards with their real values. The goal is also to get as close to 7 ½ without exceeding it, else he is busted.
Blackjack continued to evolve until it reached its present state and is still now evolving. Blackjack does not require anymore a jack to go with the ace. Any card with a value of 10 is considered, as long as the two cards total to twenty one. Blackjack also can now be played at the internet, be it for innocent fun or to earn some money through an online casino.
Online casinos, each offering casino bonus in return for joining and depositing, now offer many varieties of blackjack. This also helps the development of blackjack. Who knows, it may be called another game in the next centuries and may have more complicated rules than today's blackjack.
